"Speaking for God" smells like ancient cedar. Referenced throughout the Bible in association with building temples, purification, and also—um—the tale of the Leviathan, cedarwood is used in aromatherapy these days to relax the body and help relieve anxious thoughts.

"Speaking as a Man" has a sexy, high-end cologne smell. Because, even when our noble leaders are speaking as men, they're just so hunky about it, aren't they? (Sarcasm, except maybe, just possibly with respect to Uchtdorf...rawr.)

CANDLE INSPIRATION

When I was a believing Mormon, I didn't doubt that our leaders were speaking for God during General Conference. I was told that their words were living scripture, even more important than the words of the Bible because they were revelation for our day, exactly the words God needed us to hear right now.

When I was a believing Mormon, it would have been apostasy to claim that something Brigham Young had said over the pulpit was just him "speaking as a man." If I had suggested that some of the published words of Spencer W. Kimball were just him "speaking as a man", I might very well have gotten my temple recommend revoked.

But as the internet has increased access to the full body of what these prophets said in the past, it's become popular to excuse many of their words with the quick phrase, "He was just speaking as a man."

Death penalty for interracial marriage? Speaking as a man.

Threatening women who didn't enter polygamy? Speaking as a man.

Adam-God doctrine? Speaking as a man.

Of course, this raises a question.

How can you tell when a leader is just "speaking as a man"?

The answer is, you can't. Which is why we've made these candles identical shades of grey and capable of being burned together. Because whether Russell M. Nelson is speaking for God or speaking as a man, it looks exactly the same.
