CANDLE INSPIRATION

The Book of Mormon tells us that white skin is "delightsome".

It says that the indigenous people of the Americas had dark skin as a curse for their wickedness. The Book of Mormon calls them Lamanites and depicts them as lazy, drunken, and anti-literate.

Until 1978, the church taught that people were born Black because they'd been fence-sitters during the war in heaven.

Until 1978, even one drop of Black blood in your veins meant that you couldn't get married in the temple, and therefore couldn't achieve exaltation or be with your family in the afterlife.

Before 1978, Apostle Mark E. Petersen—who was still an apostle the year I was born—taught that Black people could only enter heaven as servants.

Brigham Young taught that the penalty for interracial marriage was "death on the spot". He said this was the law of God. When I was a teenager in the '90s and 2000s, interracial dating was still actively discouraged in For the Strength of Youth.

Spencer W. Kimball—who was still prophet the year I was born—taught that Native Americans would become "white and delightsome" in their skin tone as they converted to Mormonism.

The. List. Goes. On.

On the one hand, this candle is a call to repentance.

But this candle doesn't smell like fire and brimstone. It's luscious. It's luxurious. It is indulgent.

And that's because, far more than a call to repentance, "Dark Is Delightsome" is about loving, and it's about healing, and it's about joy. It's about reclaiming identity, and it's about reclaiming power.

QUALITY + SUSTAINABILITY

All ExMo Candles are hand-poured in small batches, and each of our recipes is tweaked and tested before coming online. We take pride in the quality of our candles.

Our candles are also vegan-friendly, made and packaged sustainably, and pthalate-free. Our commitment to sustainability includes a partnership with One Tree Planted, where we donate the money to plant 100 trees for every 100 candles sold.

Finally, the removable labels on our jars make them easy to upcycle. Woohoo!

DISCREET PACKAGING

We know that you might be living with members of the church, or heck, that your mailman might be Mormon. For that reason, we've chosen not to brand our outer packaging in any way. No one will be able to tell from the outside of the box that you've ordered anything related to being an ex-Mormon. This includes the shipping label, which will simply say it's from Jen + Adri.

Turn the lights off and keep it dark! I love the sophisticated scent of this, the blackberry, the saffron, the patchouli! It’s the kind of scent I can imagine burning in a rich man’s lamp-lit library, stocked with banned books and hot drinks.

    • Jen

I love that image. A lamp-lit library stocked with banned books and hot drinks?! Yes, please! I’m grinning ear to ear thinking about this candle evoking that feeling for you!

I bought the gift set for the book vixen and the exmo candle vixen. It was a limited edition so I can’t leave a review on it specifically but I love the candle. It smells amazing and it had amazing fun packaging. So many little details that just made me smile. Buy a candle you won’t regret it.

I’m so happy you liked it, Melanie! We worked really hard with Lindsay to make a scent that she felt represented her spirit in the memoir. Thanks so much for trying it and leaving a review!
